The Thorn Birds

There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it leaves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the savage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to outcarol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His heaven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain… Or so says the legend.”
Colleen McCullough

Meghann (Meggie) Cleary, a four-year-old girl living in New Zealand in the early twentieth century, the only daughter (in a large family of sons) of Paddy, an Irish farm labourer, and Fee (a woman who is mystery herself) is the main protagonist. The story is about her struggles and choices.
Meggie's life changes when her poor dad is invited to live and work in the estate of his wealthy sister, Mary Carson in Australia. There is no looking back after that. The whole family happily travels west to Australia. Here Meggie meets Ralph de Bricassart, a young ambitious priest who had befriended old Mary to escalate his position in the church. Mary who had fallen for the young priest detests Meggie at first sight seeing how her innocent beauty as already encaptured Ralph's attention.
Time passes by as Meggie grows up into a beautiful young woman of seventeen. Till this point Meggie had already witnessed a lot of family drama, especially between her favorite brother Frank and Paddy. She is ignorant and vulnerable. The tragedies of her life and Ralph's support throughout compels her to trust him more than any one else.
The turning point is Mary Carson's death and the whole aftermath of Ralph discovering the details of Mary's will, which she had artfully conspired in a desperate attempt to keep Ralph and Meggie away.
Now it is Ralph, who has choose between Meggie and his ambitions...
His decision has solely shaped the course, the story then takes.

The book is a thrilling breath-taking experience. It makes you laugh, cry and sulk at the same time. You end up hating the character you loved and loving the character who had hated so far. You almost feel justified about so many unjustified and unreasonable acts when you finally put the book down. Even if somethings remain unjustified, accept them as they were meant to be so.
And be sure when you're through it, you are set to encounter a void in your mind which will be difficult to fill in the coming days without thinking about this book.
Yes. This books gives you a very serious hangover...
Caution: Thinking too much is not advisable as it can seriously get you tagged as a MAD person by the people around you...

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Review:

This is one of those books which turns out to be better than their prequels. And that is saying a lot since we all know how awesome Daemon Obsidian was!
The story takes off where Obsidian left it. The healing thing that Daemon did towards the end of the book is somehow changing Katy. She is more of a ninja now! Daemon is hotter than ever (somehow that is possible) and together these two are combusting !!! And their scenes together are more intense, more lovable and at times more aww-ish.

The plot is jaw dropping. The way things turn out with the DOD and The Arum and the missing and the dead made me cross my fingers hoping that nothing bad would happen to all of them (except Ash maybe).

Also we have a newcomer Bill Flake Bob Bilbo Blake and no guesses there, we a love triangle is formed. I loved how Daemon was marking his territory by constantly humiliating Blake. Like he could compete with His Holy Alien-ness! Blake is ummm normal. HA

“Jesus.” Blake rubbed his throat. “You have anger management problems. Its like a disease.”
“There’s a cure and it’s called kicking your ass.”

In this book, I did not like Katy as much as before. It had something to do with the fact that she just refused to accept her feelings towards Daemon when EVERYONE could see that. Its like I love him but it is not real .I should hang out with Blake instead. What ?

 Thank God for Daemon!

The ending: Dude shit! Give me Opal NOW is all I can say.

Ya! Just like that !

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review:

This novella is a prequel to the hugely successful book Obsidian. But my suggestion would be that you read it after Obsidian (like I did! You will connect with it more). This book, to a large extent explains Daemon's attitude and Dee's loneliness in the sequels. And even though I knew what was going to happen at the end, I was still heartbroken.

This is Dawson's story, Dee and Daemon's brother and it happens before Katy moved next door to them. He is a sweetheart. Insta-love! Unlike his brother, he is more social, fun and in many ways brave in love. Beth is the new girl in school, very pretty, kinda shy, creative and uber cute. For these two, it was love at first sight *sigh* but what should have been a simple, sweet and adorable love story turns out to be Romeo and Juliet.

What happens with these two resembles what happens to Daemon and Katy but it is in this plot that you actually realize how different these couples are. Not that I am comparing them!

Another amazing thing about this book is the relationship between the three siblings :') Only a sadist *cough cough* would want to see this family separated. Dee is such a cutie pie.

Dee's awesomeness:

“What?" he demanded.
"Did you just...clean a dish?" Dee backed away slowly, blinking. She glanced at Daemon. "The world is going to end. And I’m still a vir—"

"No!" both the brothers yelled in unison.

Daemon looked like he was actually going to vomit. "Jesus, don’t ever finish that statement. Actually, don’t ever change that. Thank you."

Her mouth dropped open."You expect me to never have—"

"This isn’t a conversation I want to start my morning with." Dawson grabbed his book bag off the kitchen table.

Jane Eyre

by Charlotte Brontë

She, who had never expected anything from the world around her, let alone love. A childhood which had not offered any solace or comfort, let alone memories to be cherished.

No sight so sad as that of a naughty child," he began, "especially a naughty little girl. Do you know where the wicked go after death?"

"They go to hell," was my ready and orthodox answer.

"And what is hell? Can you tell me that?"

"A pit full of fire."

"And should you like to fall into that pit, and to be burning there for ever?"

"No, sir."

"What must you do to avoid it?"

I deliberated a moment: my answer, when it did come was objectionable: "I must keep in good health and not die.”

At the age of ten she is sent to Lowood (a school for poor or orphaned girls) by her maternal aunt, the hardships of her already difficult childhood increasing many-fold. After suffering much she finally emerges as a winner, leaving school at the age of eighteen as a confident young woman.
She soon delves into her new found job and starts exploring the possibilities of finally being free to make a new life with whatever was on offer.
The tale takes off from this point. And you will have to read to find out whether she finds love or not. And even if she finds it, how difficult is it a path to tread along. The book is an experience of lifetime, with mysteries unimmaginable and twists that shock you.
Jane as a character is subtle. She is a proper heroine who displays courage and an unflinching belief in what is right. She makes choices which are impossible to make, especially when you have longed for something your entire length of life, and which is now against your own principles. She is practical and does not let her emotions overpower her reasoning. She is a defintion of what true internal beauty is like.
The book has many characters, each one alive and livid in its pages. The emotions captured are so real that you drift to a world, the author had created years ago. It touches your conscience and inspires you to ask questions at moments which you think will decide the path the story will eventually take.
The liveliest example is the fortune-teller scene...but of course you will have to read this book to know what I mean.

TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES

'She looked absolutely pure. Nature, in her fantastic trickery, had set such a seal of maidenhood upon Tess's countenance that he gazed at her with a stupefied air :”Tess- say it is not true! No, it is not true!”'

Tess Durbeyfield wakes up to her father's new found but long lost ancestry and the poor peasant family has a hope now that their turmoils may indeed end with this revelation. The girl who was in her teens sets on a journey to find kinship in the rich d'Urbervilles, she being one of the descendants of the decayed aristocratic family.
In lieu she finds betrayal, her maidenhood is violated before she has had a chance to learn about the dangers a woman faces from the other sex.

"Doubtless some of Tess d'Urberville's mailed ancestors rollicking home from fray had dealt the same measure even more ruthlessly towards peasant girls of their time. but though to visit the sins of the fathers upon the children may be a morality good enough for divinities, it is scorned by average human nature; and it therefore does not mend the matter."

Before she could come to terms with what had happened, she loses her heart to another man with the hope of finally rejoicing in her new life and leaving her past behind.
The chain of events that follow will surely shock you and may even leave some of you numb. The one-sided definition of morality which is only applicable to the fairer sex is questioned every now and then. Tess lived through all these advertisities, but never wished for revenge.
But, the step she finally took was not only drastic but is still unacceptable in the society we live in.

Amidst the emotional dilemma, the tale is of a woman who displays a strong moral character. She is meant to be a representation of 'A Pure Woman'.

One of Hardy's best works, it is must read for serious as well as non-serious readers. It' ll help you come to terms with what was the conditions of women a century ago and how it is still the same today...they are not even human beings for some.

Obsidian (Lux # 1)

by

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

Review:

There has been a lot of buzz around this book. One of my best friends and fellow blogger gave it to me. She said it was steamy.

Ummm Understatement. (Go check out the official pictures. Just so you know!)

This book is seriously one of the "hawtest" books I have ever read.

Katy is an average girl (who doesn't know that she is beautiful :/), a book review blogger (<3) whose life changes when her father dies and she has to move to another place where she becomes close friends with her neighbour Dee (adorable. love her!) but Dee's brother is another story.....Katy is brave, sarcastic, quirky and NOT stupid. She is pretty great.

Dee's brother Daemon has to be The Ultimate world class jerk whom every girl loves. Like Katy said and I could not agree more, he falls into the holy trinity of hot boys. If you have hormones, you will love him.

The main reason why this book worked for me is Katy and Daemon's undeniable chemistry and their moments together.  Their romance, though hot and cold, is like "butterflies meet stomach". Their conversations rock !!! How can two people think of such kickass things to say to each other, anyway?

This story also includes:

1) Aliens-  Well there had to be a reason why Daemon was out of this world (see what I did there!) hot and had freaky abilities. They are beings of light which i thought was interesting. Their home planet was destroyed by beings of shadows and now they are living on Earth and the government knows about them!
2)A plot which does resemble Twilight- I was glad Katy stood on her own feet in front of Daemon so it did not feel that wrong.
3)A kinda confusing end- I did not get EXACTLY what happened. But I guess that's what the sequel is for.

Recommended for lovers of paranomal literature and young adults and hot boys !

I've Got Your Number

I’ve lost it. :( The only thing in the world I wasn’t supposed to lose. My engagement ring. It’s been in Magnus’s family for three generations. And now the very same day his parents are coming, I’ve lost it. The very same day! Do not hyperventilate, Poppy. Stay positive :) !!

Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents . . . she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

 Review:

If I could describe this book in a single sentence, it would be
"Sugar and spice and everything nice."
This book has to be Kinsella's best so far.

Poppy Wyatt is our typical Kinsella heroine. She is cute, funny, intelligent yet insecure. On the day her future (and scary) in-laws are coming to town, she ends up losing her engagement ring which had been in their family for generations and that's not it. Her phone gets stolen too. Now how will the hotel staff contact her in case they find the ring?

As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Perfect!

Not really.
It turns out that it was a company phone belonging to Sam Roxton, a big shot at White Globe Consulting and he is not okay with her having it and prying in her life.

But then, thankfully, they agree on a phone-sharing agreement and what follows suit is hilarious. I love the kind of situations the author put Poppy through, especially two them. One involved Beyonce's Single Ladies and the other one involved a fake engagement ring. ROFL.

Sam is amazing, grounded, sensible, hardworking yet (like most of the guys, i guess) not very emotional. Poppy and he totally complement each other. Their scenes together are heartwarming.

Both of them had their own lives. Poppy was busy with her wedding prep and Sam was busy with his office politics. This is a story of how their lives interwined through texts and emails and how they ended up helping each other.

And who does Poppy end up with: Magnus (fiance extraordinaire) or Sam?

I kinda wish I could live this book. One of my favourite chick lit till date :')

NIGHTS of RAIN and STARS

By Maeve Binchi

We often confide in strangers, believing they would not care to make that effort of judging us when we are actually rendering the secrets of our heart out. Sometimes, we just want a pair of ears to listen to our side of the story when the people who mattered have shown their back unwilling to lend those listening ears.

Nights of Rain and Stars narrates a tale of four young people on the quest of searching answers to the problems of their lives. They are all trying to escape something or the other but destiny throws them in a small village Aghia Anna, Greece. A tragedy, which rather takes its toll on many lives, brings them together as tourists trying to make ease with these unusual and unfortunate circumstances.

From Ireland, America, Germany and England; Fiona, Thomas, Elsa and David are all very different people with different stories and troubles. Yet they end up helping each other to find solutions that they did not think existed. And yes, then there are the friendly natives of the beautiful Aghia Anna who play their parts very well.

The book takes you on to a rather exciting and unexpected journey. It is not something that is very complicated and philosophical and tough to comprehend. It is just full of simple things that end up holding deeper meanings when you actually encounter them. The simplicity of the story is what may touch you at the end. It will not have a very strong impact on you but you will sure have a smile on your face when you reach the very end.

I have met many people on this voyage whose problems are greater than mine. Oddly it has calmed me down.”

This is precisely the effect the story has on you, it calms you down.

The Zoya Factor

The Zoya Factor

The Zoya Factor

by

REVIEW:

Sophie Kinsella, Meg Cabot and Lauren Weisberger BEWARE!
Anuja Chauhan is here :)
I haven't read many indian chick lits but if I may have your permission, I would like to proclaim her as the queen of Indian Chick lits. The Zoya Factor was a laugh riot. A refreshing read. This book is a shudh, desi  (more than just) romance. This book is contemporary India. Be it the desi girls who just love SRK, the swamijis, hinglish or our national religion cricket.

Zoya Solanki:
She is a cutesy Karol Bagh girl and a mid level executive working at the biggest ad agency in India. This story is about how she becomes "Zoya Devi".Her power is that she just needs to eat with a team and peck a player or two, and the heavens conspire to make the team win any match! I found the concept very novel and Zoya's character very relatable. In her, you will find shades of your own self.

Nikhil Khoda:
The 'kap-taan'. He doesn't believe in luck and wants the boys to win by believing in their own selves. He constantly clashes with Zoya but there is no denying the attraction between them. Its kinda cute actually. Many of you girls will fall for him :P

Other characters of the novel like Zoravar, Eppa, Rinku Chachi, Vishal, Monita even Sanks are people you would have met somewhere.

Its a light , fun and entertaining book.Do give it a read. I hope they make a movie based on it soon (i have heard some rumours!)

The Secret Diamond Sisters

The Secret Diamond Sisters (The Secret Diamond Sisters, #1)

The Secret Diamond Sisters (The Secret Diamond Sisters #1)

Savannah. Courtney. Peyton.

The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break. But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad—a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite. Suddenly the Strip's most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.

 Review:

"What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas but that does not count when you live there."
I honestly thought this book would be lame. I mean it is the story of three sisters who grew up with an irresponsible mother, not really knowing their father, who btw turns out to be a billionaire! And needless to say it changes their lives. There is glitz, glam, money, catfights and gorgeous guys.

Cliched pauper becomes princess story. True.
Was i wrong? Absolutely.
This book exceeded my (non-existent) expectations. It is a light hearted novel perfect for the fans of Gossip Girl and Chasing Liberty.

The sisters are very different from each other. Savannah is naive who thinks Vegas is some sort of Wonderland where she will finally be in the limelight. Peyton is a badass. Courtney is my favourite diamond sister. She is the sweet, responsible type.I think she is adopted:p
I really like the way the sister relationship has been described in the book. There are so many characters in it and i had a hard time deciding whether they are good or not, particularly Madisson. I am curious to see how these characters would develop. The plot very subtly creates a sense of mystery around these sisters and I WANT ANSWERS.

Perfect ;)

Even though the ending of the book was kind of abrupt like some pages were missing in the end, but I see potential in this series.

Kane and Abel

“ 'Abel' she repeated, and seemed to hesitate. I can't remember if it was Abel who killed Cain, or Cain who killed Abel.”
Abel could remember.
The tale is centred around the lives of two men ,both from different backgrounds, one the son of a millionaire and other, a bastard son of someone he could have never imagined even being related to in any way.
Born on the same date, William Lowell Kane and Abel Rosnovski were poles apart. Abel, who was ruined down to become a penniless Polish immigrant in America at a very young age in the attack by the Russians on Poland, was now set to defy his destiny. William was too busy in tackling the miseries that life bestowed upon him every now and then. Even though he had all the luxuries that a child could wish for, yet at the most crucial times he lost his beloved ones. He was rich but broken.
Both were determined to make something worthwhile of a life which had been nothing but a test from the very beginning.
And one day they did cross each others paths. Had they become friends then the story might not have turned into what it turned out be, a sheer masterpiece...yes they were more than friends. They were rivals competing at their best and no one but they themselves could justify this rivalry.
Set to destroy each other these men played in full spirits.
With twists unimmaginable for the readers, the story is so engrossing that you cannot put the book down without knowing who had the last laugh.

About Us

Leena Goel and Disha Sachdeva are young, not so wild ,free and dangerously educated (SRCC!) bibliophiles who are afraid that their To Be Read book list might be longer than their life expectancy. These two have started this blog to just 'talk' about the books they have read, their 'not as good as the book' movie adaptations and anything and everything that is related to it. You know when they read, their minds behave like closed economies but just wait for them to finish it. Then trade flourishes...
