The Zoya Factor
by Anuja Chauhan
When the
younger players in India's cricket team find out that advertising
executive Zoya Singh Solanki was born at the very moment India won the
World Cup back in 1983, they are intrigued. When having breakfast with
her is followed by victories on the field, they are impressed. And when
not eating with her results in defeat, they decide she's a lucky charm.
The nation goes a step further.
Amazed at the ragtag team's sudden spurt of victories, it declares her a Goddess.
So
when the eccentric IBCC president and his mesmeric,
always-exquisitely-attired Swamiji invite Zoya to accompany the team to
the tenth ICC World Cup, she has no choice but to agree.
Pursued
by international cricket boards on the one hand, wooed by Cola majors on
the other, Zoya struggles to stay grounded in the thick of the world
cup action. And it doesn't help that she keeps clashing with the
erratically brilliant new skipper who tells her flatly that he doesn't
believe in luck…
REVIEW:
Sophie Kinsella, Meg Cabot and Lauren Weisberger BEWARE!
Anuja Chauhan is here :)
I haven't read many indian chick lits but if I may have your permission, I would like to proclaim her as the queen of Indian Chick lits. The Zoya Factor was a laugh riot. A refreshing read. This book is a shudh, desi (more than just) romance. This book is contemporary India. Be it the desi girls who just love SRK, the swamijis, hinglish or our national religion cricket.
Zoya Solanki:
She is a cutesy Karol Bagh girl and a mid level executive working at the biggest ad agency in India. This story is about how she becomes "Zoya Devi".Her power is that she just needs to eat with a team and peck a player or two, and the heavens conspire to make the team win any match! I found the concept very novel and Zoya's character very relatable. In her, you will find shades of your own self.
Nikhil Khoda:
The 'kap-taan'. He doesn't believe in luck and wants the boys to win by believing in their own selves. He constantly clashes with Zoya but there is no denying the attraction between them. Its kinda cute actually. Many of you girls will fall for him :P
Other characters of the novel like Zoravar, Eppa, Rinku Chachi, Vishal, Monita even Sanks are people you would have met somewhere.
Its a light , fun and entertaining book.Do give it a read. I hope they make a movie based on it soon (i have heard some rumours!)
RATING:
4/5 stars
